I think your observations are fair and directed. It seems like a resource for after-school research. It reminds me of late 90's encyclopedic website. Depending on intended audience, we might want to file this next to the old WowBanking website.

I should emphasize that one of the trickiest design tasks for a website is to make something that is kid-friendly without making it look sloppy, underdeveloped or amateur. I haven’t seen many people do it well, but even when it is done well it is easy to undervalue all the work that went into it. I don’t think this site is really all that invested in its design, but it may be an attempt at kid friendly design.

You’d really have to ask what their ad-server is doing if it was a child-oriented site. I got ads for booking flights and video conferencing, but the ads may be generated from some cookies I have from other sites. There may be much more harmony in the advertising banner if the adverstiing resource is based off of a child’s browsing. However, even then, adults and children may use the same computer.

Great, your comments are centered on another aspect of audience and info architecture. The site might be exciting as a kind of brochure, but it is not effective as an e-commerce design. This is of course a fundamental of any design, graphic, industrial, etc. What works well for one use, may not work for another. A few other gripes with the design (which is great for some other purposes):

We typically suggest that if you are going to integrate sound, you allow us to silence it – Zara’s music didn’t go well with my Pandora station.

High bandwidth is not a given – I was far from my wireless transmitter and I had to endure the background video pauses. Since them music starts and stops it was even harder to ignore as I waited for the page to cache.

Imagine if you were interested in sharing clothing you liked with your friend. You can’t rally link to it, so you would need to provide very “clear” directions like click 7 times to the left to find the scarf I liked.

Great observations. Once we get past the initial experience we are left with the less than shiny experience of actually having to use it. The site feels like a car that seems great until you actually own it. Practical matters like being able to drive, steer and get you to your destination return as important concerns. The early 200’s Jaguar X-Type comes to mind, although it probably wasn’t that bad a car.

Try to be more specific about your comments. It's not enough to say I hate this site - in terms of design - what frustrates you? your two bullet points are the same. Your set of comments amount to poor info architecture - that's one problem - need more.

Oh, so sad, I love M.I.A but here is a web design travesty. I think the goal was to make some urban-styled aesthetic in a web design. Intense, exciting and graffiti-dense. If you look at the styling of Dancehall stars the aesthetic decisions make so much more sense. It is an original design and perhaps there is a question of audience here. Watch videos like bird Flu and you’ll get a sense for the density packed into both the music and the music. We could talk for hours about how M.I.A.’s music is college of emblems from Dancehall Reggae, her Sri-Lankan past, etc, etc, but that wouldn’t make this site any easier to palette for “mainstream audiences.” Even if we “excuse the design” as audience specific, I’d emphasize that metaphor is so tricky I usually tell people to stay far, far away from it. A website is not a wall, it’s a website.

Interesting, the text is washed out (light grey on white) but I’m not sure I would call it a bad site. There is clarity and there is harmony. I didn’t like being kicked out of the site you buy the book, but other than that the design is unified, clear and relatively easy to use. This may be an interesting one to discuss in class, I’d like to see and hear more about why it was chosen as a bad site.

just to elaborate a little more on why i chose this website. if you click on the explore our product link at the top of the page .. the page is full of inspirational artwork that is laid out in a very easy to manage layout. also for interior design they give you color pallets. And they all have an easy to sort tool bar off to the side
